I am SO happy that my friend Kate Garraway won a National TV Award on Thursday night for her heartbreaking documentary, Finding Derek.
Sadly, it won’t change anything for Kate at home, of course, but it is a much-needed chunk of cheer in a life that has been turned totally upside down by the ravages of Covid suffered by her husband.
Kate has been through utter hell since Derek first fell ill in March last year.
Yet she continues to try and hold her family together, as well as working to pay the bills and making sure her children, Darcy and Billy, are having as normal a life as they possibly can under the circumstances.

And as if all of that isn’t enough, she is also finding it hard to find suitable care for Derek while she’s out at work. It is a huge, unimaginable load to bear. I really don’t know how she’s doing it all and still hanging on to her sanity. She is truly awesome.
And she could certainly do without the usual mindless, nasty, ignorant trolls who have crept out of their filthy holes to dump bile on her.

She’s a working mum who is holding down two demanding jobs, as well as trying to keep her family life as normal and loving as it can be, while her husband is doing his best to recover from the ravages of a killer virus.
The cost to herself and her mental health must be enormous, but she cannot let go of the reins, because her family needs her and she is vital to the mental wellbeing of her children, as well as, of course, to Derek.
It is a huge, huge load to carry around on a daily basis.
Thank goodness for her work then, a daily chance to be herself, to do what she loves doing and to have some headspace away from the challenges at home.
Your audience needs you Kate! Long may you reign.
