Kate Garraway in tears as she explains 'miracle' moment she saw Derek speak first word

Kate Garraway broke down in tears today as she opened up about the moment she first saw husband Derek Draper speak, hailing it a "miracle".

The 53-year-old appeared on Good Morning Britain today after revealing at the weekend that Derek had mouthed his first word since coming out of his coma in the summer.

Speaking to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, she said: "Back in April when we chatted for the first time and I said, look, he seems to have survived so far... this could be it [miracle]."

Suggesting this could be the second miracle, Kate said that she is "very much trying to keep [herself] in check".

Kate went on to explain the moment she witnessed Derek first speak, saying: "[The hospital staff] keep talking to him and they would say 'Ok, we're just going to move your arm or leg' and every time they said 'Let us know if you feel pain.'

"He mouthed 'pain'... everyone stopped and stared."

Hailing it as a "breakthrough", Kate also admitted that it was "heartbreaking" as Derek was clearly in pain.

"It is heartbreaking because he does feel pain but what it does mean is that he has been able to feel a sensation in his body and connect it with his brain and then mouth pain," she said.

"I believe he is in there," Kate said. "That's a long way from who Derek is....but it's a start."

She added: "The power of hope is huge but you're constantly trying to think if hope is still real."

"I was getting scared because I was thinking if it's hard for him, how hard must it be for him stuck in there," Kate continued. "He's been able to fight out of there."
