Kate Garraway 'heartbroken' by Trump's coronavirus claims as her children still can't see their dad

Kate Garraway says Donald Trump's attitude to coronavirus is 'heartbreaking' as the US President told Americans not to fear the pandemic as he left hospital.

It was revealed in the early hours of Friday that Trump had tested positive for COVID-19 and less than 24 hours later he was taken into nearby Walter Reed hospital, giving regular updates on his condition.

At 11.30pm UK time Monday, the President returned to the White House and took his face mask off to pose on its famous balcony and give a salute.

But it's his tweet about coronavirus that has upset many people, including Kate, whose husband Derek is still in hospital more than six months after being struck down by COVID.

While he is now free from the virus, his organs have been left severely damaged and his weight has plummeted.

On his release from hospital, Trump tweeted a video of him addressing the nation. In it he pleaded with Americans "don't let it (coronavirus) dominate you! Don't be afraid of it!

"You're gonna beat it. I went in and I didn't feel so good and two days ago, I could have left two days ago - I felt great, better than I have in a long time."

He ended the video saying: "Don't let it dominate your lives...get out there, be careful," before adding that the "vaccines are coming momentarily."

Taken aback by Trump's claims, Good Morning Britain host Kate reacted to them on Tuesday's show, saying: "It's extraordinary isn't it, it is extraordinary. It's heartbreaking actually.

"His attitude, you could argue, sanctioned the behaviour at that event whenever it was in September.

"Now nine people have been infected, 10 including him, would they have even traced many of the other people?

"Really, what would you be doing if this was you or me, we'd be sobbing our hearts out going, 'oh my goodness, this is awful' and 'aren't I lucky I am doing well'.

"Do you think on some level he knows and he's got to just carry on like this?"
