Kate Garraway 'heartbroken' after US President Donald Trump plays down severity of coronavirus

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway has admitted to finding Donald Trump's latest claims about coronavirus "heartbreaking".

The presenter's husband, Derek Draper, remains in hospital after falling ill with the virus early this year.

He was placed in an induced coma in April just weeks after being diagnosed with Covid-19, and has yet to recover fully, the Mirror reports.

Kate shared her disbelief yesterday that Derek's kids and parents had been unable to visit him since he was admitted at the end of March, yet Trump could leave isolation just days after testing positive.

Trump was said to have tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday before being admitted to a hospital a day later.

Now, just days on the president says he is "feeling great".

From the White House, he told the US public not to fear coronavirus, and not to let it "dominate their lives".

In a video of his return home, he was seen landing at the White House before dramatically looking out from the balcony having taken his mask off.

Another clip saw Trump telling the US public that medicines and even a vaccine would be available soon.

Trump added repeatedly that they were going to beat the virus, so the public shouldn't let it dominate their lives because he was "feeling great".

Hitting out at the scenes, Kate revealed her shock over the president's statements, particularly as the country has now recorded more than 210,000 deaths linked to the illness.

She said: "It's extraordinary isn't it, it is extraordinary. It's heartbreaking actually.

"His attitude, you could argue, sanctioned the behaviour at that event whenever it was in September.

"Now nine people have been infected, 10 including him, would they have even traced many of the other people?"

She went on: "Really, what would you be doing if this was you or me, we'd be sobbing our hearts out going, 'oh my goodness, this is awful' and 'aren't I lucky I am doing well'.

"Do you think on some level he knows and he's got to just carry on like this?"

On his advice not to fear the virus, she added: "It's terrible because it's not even just the deaths or the fear of death. Those 210,000 people have families that are grieving, so the event isn't just the illness, but it's the impact on lives and livelihoods."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
