Kate Garraway gives full extent of Derek's latest health woes after he fought coronavirus

Kate Garraway has listed the full extent of her husband Derek Drapers' latest health battles after revealing he has now recovered from Covid-19.

Father-of-two Derek was taken ill with coronavirus back in March and while he is now free from the deadly virus, has been struck by a number of other health complications which have kept him in intensive care.

"It's affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes," Kate revealed on Good Morning Britain.

Speaking in her second interview of the day with The Sun, Kate detailed the 'extraordinary damage' wreaked on Derek's body which had been exposed in full by an MRI scan.

Kate said Derek - who has no underlying health conditions - has been left with 'extraordinary damage' after contracting the virus (ITV)

"The MRI showed that he has damage everywhere, holes in his heart, his liver is impacted, and his pancreas . . . well, he’s now very, very diabetic which he wasn’t before," said Kate.

“He’s been on kidney dialysis because his kidneys stopped functioning. And his nerves and his neurology have been affected by the virus, but the impact and the damage of that, they don’t yet know.

“He’s still being given breathing support, but the hope is that each day he will need less. They are watching him constantly, it’s like spinning plates. But whatever happens, we’re looking at months and months of rehabilitation.”

She also said Derek has a tracheotomy to help him breathe but his lungs - which have clots - are showing some signs of recovery.

Speaking on  Good Morning Britain today, Kate said doctors were not certain if Derek would ever recover.

Kate, 52, said despite the bleak outlook, she would never give up on her husband and would search forever to find him a cure.

The TV star admitted tearfully that she did have an emotional crash a few weeks ago but she knew she couldn't stay like that forever and had to be strong for her children.

"The problem is I have huge hope and massive positivity and will never give up on that because Derek is the core of our lives, but at the same time I have absolute uncertainty," shesaid.

Speaking about their kids William and Darcey, Kate added "I just have to think, I need to make them feel safe, they've lost for the time being - let's pray - their dad and he's their world, so they need to see that their mum is OK."

She said that the family remain hopeful and have even made Derek a welcome home banner.
