Kate Garraway given standing ovation as she dedicates NTA win to husband Derek Draper

Kate Garraway was given a standing ovation as she won an award at the National Television Awards.

The Good Morning Britain star delivered an emotional speech as she picked up the Authored Documentary gong on Thursday night.

Kate, 54, won the award for her ITV documentary, Finding Derek, which aired earlier this year and showed the reality of Derek's condition and their family's struggles amid Derek's recovery.

Former political adviser Derek spent more than a year in hospital after coronavirus "wreaked havoc" on his body.

He returned home in April this year where he received around-the-clock care.

After her name was announced, the audience of famous faces from the small screen stood to applaud a visibly emotional Kate.

The TV presenter had to take a moment to collect herself before delivering her speech.

"It was a hugely brave decision of ITV to commission, they didn’t know what they were making. Lucy [director] arrived not knowing if she was seeing a family in grief or relief, in the end it ended up being something between the two.

"Thank you so much for voting. I’m wondering if that was because our story is also your story.

"We’ve all been touched by the pandemic, all the other docs that have been highlighted and nominated tonight they’ve also been affected by the pandemic."

She added: "To all the Darceys and Billys and Dereks and his family whatever you’re going through, you’re not forgotten.

"We want the joy back, we want it to be over but if you’re still living with the scars the fight goes on."

Kate finished her speech with a dedication to her husband.

"Most of all Derek, who should be here who tell his story. Derek, you’re gonna get the chance. Believe.

"The hope is real. Thank you so much."

Kate had earlier spoken about her doubts about attending the NTAs.

But an emotional moment with stranger made her change her mind and she showed up to the ceremony at London's O2 Arena with GMB co-host Ben Shephard.

Kate also gave an update on her Derek during an appearance on This Morning.

She said progress is 'painfully slow' in the 'tough' update but says she, and others, believe he "understands everything."
