Kate Garraway given hope over husband from 'miracle' coronavirus survivor

Lorraine Kelly says she "has hope" for Good Morning Britain presenting colleague Kate Garraway and her husband after she interviewed a 'miracle' coronavirus survivor, who was given just a 1% chance of pulling through.

It's been well over two months now since Kate's other half, writer and former Labour aide Derek was taken into hospital after contracting COVID-19 and, while initially it was hoped he would make a speedy recovery, he has remained in intensive care ever since after being put in an induced coma.

He has now been taken out of the coma but has failed to regain consciousness with Kate's friend, journalist and Loose Women star Jane Moore, saying: "Derek contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital, it looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience, and come out largely unscathed, but it's attacked all his vital organs.

"He's now COVID free, they've brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma and brought him out of the coma, and he's not regained consciousness yet."

On Tuesday's GMB, Lorraine spoke to Steve Banks, who fell ill with coronvirus in March, before the UK was put on lockdown due to the global pandemic.

After being taken into hospital, his last memory was being warned that he made need to be put into coma if his breathing didn't improve and, upon waking up 50 days later, he was in a different hospital and was met by a nurse celebrating the fact he'd had regained consciousness.

Unbeknown to Steve, his wife Lisa and the couple's children were told he had "a very slim chance" of making it through and they were asked to write letters to be read to him.

Thankfully, Steve is now well on the road to recovery and speaking to him via video link, Lorraine told him: "You are a miracle."

Ending the interview, Lorraine then said: "Hearing that gives us all hope for our Kate, who as you know has been going through hell because Derek has been in a coma for 10 weeks now and we're just all hoping that he will wake up at some point and start that recovery process.

"That story is just remarkable."
