Kate Garraway 'given hope' for husband Derek's coronavirus health battle

Kate Garraway has revealed what is giving her hope for her husband Derek Draper's future as he deals with the devastating repercussions of being struck down by coronavirus.

The former Labour aide has been in a hospital bed since the end of March after contracting COVID-19. Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma and, while now free of the virus, it has had a severe impact on his body with his weight plummeting and many of his vital organs damaged.

Kate opened up about how she's been coping during such a traumatic year on Gardener's World on Friday night, with her appearance on the famous BBC show sparking a huge reaction.

She was quizzed on the show and her love for gardening by her Good Morning Britain colleagues Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Monday morning and said: "The garden is past present and future in one place.

"By planting plants and nurturing them to grow gives you hope for future."

Piers then asked her what her favourite plants was and she gave the surprising answer: ""I like weeds. Something about them fighting for life."

During her appearance on Gardener's World, Kate spoke about feeling 'helpless' after concerning receiving calls about Derek from doctors.

She said: "I'd often get a phone call at midnight saying we're not sure he's gonna make it through the night.

"You can't sleep after that and I was helpless.

"So I come out into the garden at one in the morning, do random and mad things like water his favourite plants."
