Kate Garraway's hope for Derek Draper in story of Everest climber who was left for dead

Kate Garraway found new hope for her husband Derek Draper in the story of a mountaineer who nearly died on Everest.

Derek has remained critically ill in hospital after his body has fought off the coronavirus infection.

The breakfast TV star, 52, responded to a fan's message who told her to seek comfort in the story of a Everest climber's survival.

His death was announced but 12 hours later a group of climbers stumbled across him sitting up, frostbitten and very much alive.

Lincoln had come back to life after stages of unconsciousness.

Six years later, the Australian climber died aged 56 when he lost his battle to cancer mesothelioma in 2012.

Fans brought this incredible story of survival to Kate's attention on Twitter.

Among messages of support, one fan reached out to say: "@kategarraway..keep going with the messages he is hanging on, for a reason, for you, the kids, he has to come back to you all and he will.

"Try to watch the you tube clip about Lincoln Hall, he explains about the stages of unconsciousness that he came back from. Big hugs xxx." (sic)

Kate sought comfort from the post and responded to the kind words.

She wrote: "Thanks - will do xxx."

Kate has been looking after the kids Darcey, 14, and William, 10, at home while Derek remained in the care of doctors at hospital.

The presenter vowed never to give up on her husband in a tearful Father's Day tribute.

She wrote: "This week I am refocusing on hope that as a family we are going to pull together with the support of friends and get through everything come what may.

"Hope- because I know that the amazing people keeping Derek alive, stand shoulder to shoulder with me in NEVER giving up on him and, of course, hope that my wonderful Derek is going to keep fighting this and eventually start to slowly recover."
