Kate Garraway fights back tears as she tells Lorraine Kelly about husband Derek's birthday message

Kate Garraway had to fight back the tears after she told Lorraine Kelly of Derek Draper's latest birthday message to her.

Kate told the Scots ITV presenter it was a ‘fantastic sign’ as Derek continues his recovery from coronavirus at home after spending a year in hospital.

Derek, a former political advisor, is now off all machines but can't yet have full conversations with his family.

However, he is showing promising signs, remembering Kate’s birthday and saying ‘happy birthday’ before she left to appear on Lorraine this morning.

Kate. said: "He’s home, we can hug him. That’s a miracle in itself.

"Last night when I was tucking him in, I said: 'It’s my birthday tomorrow.'

"He looked a bit worried and I said: 'Oh don’t worry, I’m not expecting anything. My birthday gift is you being home.'

"I came in this morning… and I said: "Is there anything you want to say to me?" And he said: “Oh, Happy Birthday!”.’

"That’s huge," Lorraine replied as Kate began to cry - she told her colleague they were all "happy tears".

"I'm getting emotional and I can’t look at you at the moment," the presenter said as she tried to compose herself.

Kate has written about her and Derek’s experience in her book The Power of Hope.

She revealed her beloved husband had noticed her fifteen-year-old daughter Darcey had been eating crisps when she went to hug him.

Derek said that 'she smelled of monster munch' and smiled, which Kate and her family has taken as another positive sign.

Derek got coronavirus in late March 2020 and was later placed into an induced coma.

Viewers were thrilled to hear the latest developments and one said: "@GMB @reallorraine just watched @kategarraway emotional interview this is what can happen when you never give up #Hope #ThePowerOfHope."
