Kate Garraway fights back tears as Derek mouths 'pain' after waking from coma

Kate Garraway fought back tears on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, as she opened up on the distressing moment her husband Derek Draper mouthed the word "pain" after waking from his coma.

Derek has been in hospital since last March after he contracted coronavirus and then suffered multiple organ failure.

Kate, unable to visit her husband for so long as he fought for his life, relied on video calls and footage filmed by staff to be updated on his condition.

After waking from his coma, Kate was heartbroken during a call when her husband mouthed the word "pain" while speaking to nurses.

Kate admitted she did not react at the time in a moving new clip from her ITV documentary, Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, but after the call she "burst into tears".

In the footage filmed last year for Kate, a nurse asks Derek if he's okay and he responds: "Pain."

As he's asked to show the nurse where the pain is, he is unable to, leaving Kate understandably distressed.

The clip sees Kate reflecting on the moment that had happened previously, as the host appeared on GMB to discuss her hopes for the special episode.

She says: "So, that is the first time I saw him mouth a word, and he mouths 'pain'.

"I saw it really clearly, and I thought ‘pain, pain’ and they just said, okay, ‘pain’. They didn’t particularly react so I didn't, but then afterwards we all burst into tears.."

She also reveals: "He can’t unfortunately," as she shows the moment a clearly uncomfortable Derek struggles to show the nurse where he is experiencing the pain.

Kate also opened up on how Derek was doing, and admitted while they hadn't had conversations as such he had said words.

She explained: "Maybe conversations are stretching it… maybe it’s more words and being able to interpret them and that has regressed a little.

"This year has not been so good… but there were [moments of progress] and that gives you hope, and there are moments in the documentary where I think people that know Derek will know that he’s there.

"For such a long time that’s been the horror, is he still in there? Is he trapped inside or is he gone?"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV, and Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs Tuesday at 9pm.
