Kate Garraway determined to have 'fun' as she makes 'emotional' GMB return

Kate Garraway returned to hosting duties on Good Morning Britain on Monday, and vowed to "have fun" on the show.

After what has been an "emotional" time in her life and on the show recently, she suggested there could be more moving stories to come.

But Kate wanted to enjoy herself as she made her comeback alongside co-star Ben Shephard, for the first time since March.

Husband Derek Draper has been critically ill since being struck down with coronavirus in March.

Addressing her return, Kate wanted to "have fun" as she replaced Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on GMB on Monday.

She explained: "We'll have some fun this morning, we’ve got a lot of emotion but we will have some fun too."

As her co-stars welcomed her back, she warned them to be "rude" to her instead of nice, as she would get emotional with the latter.

They all took a moment to praise her comeback, with fans tweeting in to do the same.

Derek was left in a coma in intensive care due to the damage Covid-19 caused to his body, while Kate and her family have remained hopeful he would recover.

Her return follows a week on from Kate announcing her big comeback to the ITV show, having stepped back four months ago.

Making her announcement, an emotional Kate said: "I'm gonna come back. I'm afraid. I'm back on Monday if you'll have me."

In her first appearance in the studio in more than 14 weeks, Kate said she felt it was important to get back to work to give her children hope that things could return to normal despite their father's ongoing health battle.

She hilariously added: “I haven't got the fight to be with Piers Morgan," she joked. But I'm back with Ben Shepherd."

While her husband remains seriously ill in hospital, doctors told her to "get on" with her life and Kate is back on the ITV breakfast show.

Opening the show, Kate said that it had been a difficult start to her return as the car to bring her to the studio had not turned up.

Then once in the studio, she had issues with her computer needing to make two hour update before she found the autocue not working.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
