Kate Garraway 'desperate' for step forward after tough hospital visit to see husband

Kate Garraway said she is 'desperate for a step forward' after a tough visit to see husband Derek Draper in hospital.

It has now been four months since the writer and former Labour aide was taken into hospital after being struck down by coronavirus and, while Kate admits she was told on numerous occasions that he wouldn't make it, Derek is now stable although his organs have been left severely damaged.

Last week, Kate raised concerns after being told that Derek's blood pressure had dropped sharply and, speaking on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain, she said she's had a "tough visit" to see him after the show on Monday, adding that it was made even more emotional by the fact it was their son Billy's birthday.

Speaking to co-host Ben Shephard, Kate explained: "I did go and see him yesterday and it was quite a tough visit.

"He's had a tough couple of weeks and you know it's the first birthday he has missed. It's Billy's birthday today so I think I was extra emotional.

"And you think of you know, he was there when was born and how Derek would like to be present today."

Discussing Derek's current condition, Kate added: "They said sometimes a day when nothing has gone backwards, and nothing has gone wrong is a positive day.

"I am desperate for a step forward and I'm sure he is always too. But it's always lovely to see him and so it's wonderful to have the chance to do that."
