Kate Garraway defends Piers Morgan as she breaks silence on his GMB exit

Kate Garraway has defended Piers Morgan live on Good Morning Britain after his much talked about exit from the show.

On Tuesday evening, ITV issued a brief statement which read: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

The announcement came after Piers stormed off the show earlier in the day after a heated clash with colleague Alex Beresford.

Alex told him" There was bad press around the engagement... and everything that has followed since," before saying it was obvious Piers "didn't like Meghan," in reference to claims made by Piers last week that she "ditched him like a sack of spuds."

He told Piers: "She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to," before accusing him of "continuing to trash her," as Piers got out of his seat and stormed off camera, saying: "I'm done with this."

The outspoken presenter did return but it looks like that was his final appearance on GMB as, after his breaking his silence on his departure and paying tribute to his former manager, he posted: "Thinking of my late, great manager John Ferriter tonight. He’d have told me to do exactly the same thing."

After Susanna Reid addressed Piers' exit on Wednesday, Kate had her say on Thursday's show, which she hosted alongside Ben Shephard.

She said: "That’s the thing about Piers, he is very passionate and does fly kites and always comes from a place of authenticity, he always believes in what he says and he’s left.

"‘He’s decided to quit and, as he says, fall on the sword of free speech, but as you rightly say I’ve known him a long time before he started working on this show and our friendship will go on, our personal friendship.

"He’s been very supportive of me personally. It’s a different show but the show goes on."

GMB's resident medic Dr Hilary Jones added: "‘I had my spats with Piers, he took politicians to account, he probed, pushed and I think he did champion the little people, the people who had no voice."
