Kate Garraway cries 'he's back' as she shares moment she spoke to husband Derek after waking from coma

Kate Garraway has said she is 'incredibly lucky' husband Derek Draper is still alive as the nation reflects on a year in lockdown.

The presenter, 53, was on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to speak with Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid about her documentary.

Finding Derek, which gives an intimate look and unflinching account of the profound effects the pandemic has had on her family, will air on ITV tonight.

Derek, also 53, was admitted to hospital at the end of March 2020 after suffering symptoms of the virus before being placed in an induced coma.

He has since suffered kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage, has holes in his lungs from pneumonia, has lost 8 stone and remains in a prolonged disorder of consciousness (PDOC).

Prior to her interview, personal footage Kate recorded for herself was played as it is shown in the documentary.

"We've got him back," she is heard saying as she speak to Derek via FaceTime while he's in hospital.

"He's back. We've been waiting a long time to speak to you. I'm so proud of you.

"You're just so brilliant an every day we are getting closer to coming home, being with the kids. You're brilliant, well done."

The couples children, Darcey, 15, and William, 11, are hen seen showing off for their dad.

Speaking on GMB ahead of the documentary airing, Kate said: "The first think I want to say is that this morning, we are hearing so many stories of people that have lost people and I am very aware I am very lucky because Derek is still here and we have got the chance to battle on.

She then explains that the documentary features her family as well as others who have been affected by coronavirus as well.

Kate also admits that there is a moment in the documentary that there's a moment in the documentary that will be "tough for people to watch and that’s the moment he felt he can’t go on."

She explained: "I managed to record that moment. Actually, it was quite a long period of that, in truth.

"That particular moment was actually a night when I was in here, on air the next morning because it started late at night and I didn't want to come off the FaceTime.

"I wanted to stay with him and tell him 'I'm still here'."

The devastating moment will be shown in the documentary.

Viewers will hear Derek saying: "Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.

"I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it."

"As in die?” she asks, before his desperate and tearful response: "Yes... I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope."

Kate said she decided to show he moment of Derek at a "low and emotional ebb" because "it is how anybody would feel when they have been trapped inside their body and mind that is not letting them communicate."

She added: "I think it was just important to show that, that is going to affect you, whatever degree you've got it."

On why she has opened up about her and Derek's journey, Kate said: "‘I thought this story needs to be told because I have a chance to tell it."
