Kate Garraway 'consumed by mixed emotions' since husband Derek left hospital

Kate Garraway has had a devastating 18 months after her husband Derek Draper contracted coronavirus last year.

He is one of the UK's longest long Covid sufferers and was in hospital for over a year after the virus wreaked havoc on his body.

He has since been able to go home and be with his wife Kate and their kids Billy and Darcey but he faces a long road to recovery and still needs full time care.

The Good Morning Britain presenter has been there by his side throughout it all but she's been feeling "mixed emotions" now Derek is home as the family still can't do a lot of things with him and have to leave him at home when they go out as a trio.

Her pal and television presenter Clare Nasir told Closer magazine : "Kate has been incredible throughout this - even more so since Derek has been home. She now basically does four jobs - presenter, mum, wife and carer.

"She's on the go all the time, and has been physically and mentally pushed to the extreme this last year and a half. So a chance to go out to the theatre - something she and the kids love - was wonderful for her.

"However, it was bittersweet, as Kate can never switch off from what's happening. I know she would have had a hotline to the house at all times and her focus would have been on Derek."

Clare also revealed Derek is "definitely in a better place" now he's home with his family as he's surrounded by "love and familiarity".

Kate went out to the West End opening of Wonderville at the Palace Theatre with her two kids and admits it was "very strange" that Derek wasn't there as he's a huge magic fan.

She told the PA news agency at the event: "It’s our first time out since February 2020 so we are really excited, and this is a date that has sprung up because it was going to happen a few weeks ago and then it didn’t happen and then we just thought, ‘Let’s go for it’ – so very exciting.

"It was very strange leaving him tonight to come out because he is a big fan of magic, but it is not possible at the moment so we just said next time and see him when we get back."

Kate has documented her husband's battle throughout the past 18 months and in her new book, the Power Of Hope, she recalled how doctors told her Derek would need to make an improvement in the next two years for him to have any meaningful recovery afterwards.

She wrote: "I had already waited so long. 'How long before you know more? Not how long will it take for him to recover, because you don’t know if he can even recover, but how long before you might know more?'

"After another long pause, he looked straight at me, then away. 'Well, Kate' - the first time he had used my name - 'I think it’s fair to say if he is still like this after two years we will know there is very little chance of him making any meaningful recovery.'"
