Kate Garraway calls out MP Robert Jenrick for denying voting against free school meals

Kate Garraway put the spotlight on MP Robert Jenrick on Good Morning Britain on Friday, as she asked about his vote against extending free school meals in October last year.

The government had initially voted against extending free school meals for kids outside of school terms amid the coronavirus pandemic, before making a U-turn - which many credited to Manchester United star Marcus Rashford who campaigned for the extension across the UK.

On GMB on Friday, Kate and co-host Alex Beresford asked about different issues including the vaccine rollout, and the support for families as England slowly comes out of lockdown over the coming months.

But as the Housing Secretary urged the importance of his newly named Supporting Families programme, Alex queried why he didn't vote in favour of free school meals for those that needed them.

Kate quickly asked if he regretted his decision, before calling him out when he appeared to swerve answering her question.

She wasn't alone either, as viewers tweeted in to hit out at the MP for not giving a simple answer on the topic.

Alex had asked: "I just wondered why you voted against free school meals then, knowing just how important it is children are fed and watered and can actually live their lives as best as possible?"

The guest replied: "Well, we didn’t vote against free school meals, we actually provided a government programme that is ensuring..." before being interrupted by Kate.

She pointed out: "Yes, you did. In October, you specifically voted against free school meals, not the voucher system but you personally did.

"Of course, we now know that Boris Johnson has made somewhat of a U-turn on that, rang Marcus Rashford to inform him, and I wonder in the light of that, you regret voting against it."

But he wasn't keen on answering it seemed, instead replying: "Let’s not get distracted on that..."

Again, Kate interrupted telling him: "I don’t think that is a distraction, I feel it’s kind of critical."

A moment later she attempted to get his latest view on free school meals, asking: "It’s also an opportunity for you to make a statement of your intent.

"I wonder if maybe you had to do it because you were instructed to do it and now that there’s been a u-turn you might regret that. Or do you still believe it was right to not extend free school meals?"

Jenrick said in response: "Well, I think that tackling the issue of child hunger and poverty is absolutely critical.

"It’s always been important but it’s gonna be even more so with all the stresses and strains we’ve seen on...."

Kate quickly called him out during his comments though, telling him: "I’m so sorry but that isn’t answering the question. That isn’t really answering the question."

She and Alex then later challenged him for his thoughts on whether the Universal Credit boost should be extended past October, but he said it wasn't his decision.

Kate told him it was up to him though whether he backed it and pushed for it in parliament, before he referred back to his support programme.

Viewers took to Twitter over the interview, with one writing: "What's the point of having these people on when they can't answer a f**king question?"

Another agreed: "@RobertJenrick If there was an award for swerving questions you would certainly win it."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
