She revealed that. while he has now recovered from Covid-19, he might not survive as the illness “wreaked extraordinary damage on his body”.

“We don’t know if he can recover from that,” she told Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh while fighting back tears.

“He’s still with us and has fought the most extraordinary battle,” she said. “The fact that he is still here, I am so grateful.”

Garraway was praised by viewers for her bravery, with many highlighting the interview as a reason why people should stay indoors despite lockdown guidelines being eased.

“Her interview this morning was so powerful, incredible woman,” Emmerdale star Charley Webb wrote, adding: “Staying so strong for her family. Everyone that thinks the virus has gone, watch that and have a think about what we all still need to be doing. Keep safe, keep your distance.”

Susanna Reid added: “You are such a tower of strength for Derek and the children. So much love for you all. Everyone watching is with you, hoping for that miracle.

Another viewer wrote: “This interview with Kate Garraway needs to be a wake up call for everyone. This virus changes lives. The easing of lockdown will end up causing many more situations like Kate’s husband.”
