Kate Garraway breaks down on GMB as she shares emotional update on husband Derek Draper

GMB's Kate Garraway brought the nation to tears as she shared an emotional update on her husband Derek Draper.

The daytime TV host's husband was admitted to hospital earlier this year after he was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Kate became emotional as she spoke to intensive care nurses at the Whittington hospital who had cared for Derek when he first became ill.

Derek has been in hospital suffering with coronavirus since March and although he is now negative he remains in hospital battling serious health issues.

Kate gave an update to viewers earlier in Friday's show and said she'd been forced to isolate for two weeks after her children came into contact with someone with coronavirus, but thankfully they all tested negative.

At the end of the show Kate met nurses Kathleen and Karen who had cared for Derek in the Spring, reports the ECHO.

"When he went into the Whittington when he first got sick and his life was saved by you, I'm getting emotional now.

"I've never spoken to you because we weren't allowed to visit and it was a chaotic time for me when all that was going on and I was often unable to speak directly to the staff that were caring for him, so thank you so much and for all you're doing for so many people."

The nurses said: "You're welcome Kate we did our very best to look after all the patients including Derek, all of us here looked after Derek, I was here the day he was admitted and we want to wish you all the very best from all the staff.

Kate said: "It's so great to talk to you I didn't realise you had cared for Derek.

"It's been a difficult time, but we are so much better prepared this time around we have been training everybody to come and help us and everyone has been so willing to come and join us."

Kate said she wanted to continue her conversation with the nurses off air and said: "You are all absolute heroes and saviours of Derek."

The nurses are part of the ICU Liberty Choir who are aiming to get Christmas number one with their rendition of "I'll be watching you" by the Police.

All the proceeds from the single will go towards supporting the mental health and wellbeing of NHS intensive care staff.
