Kate Garraway admits it’s been a ‘rough week’ for Derek Draper but ‘he's fighting’

Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway says it has been a particularly difficult week for her husband, Derek Draper.

The former lobbyist is recovering from a harrowing COVID-19 battle after contracting the illness in March.

He was hospitalised and put into a medically induced coma which lasted 13 weeks, and he awoke in July but is not fully conscious.

Kate has been visiting him and GMB is played into his hospital room in the hope hearing his wife’s voice may help him wake up.

Derek's recovery will be a slow process as the virus has "attacked everything", leaving him with clots in his lungs, holes in his heart and made him diabetic, and doctors have warned Kate that Derek might never recover from the damage done to his body.

Kate and co host Ben Shepherd had been speaking to former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

At the end of the interview, Gordon sent his well wishes to Kate and Derek amid their awful struggle.

Kate thanked him for his kind words, and admitted: “It’s been a tough week for Derek, but he is fighting.”

As Lorraine Kelly joined them from their studio, she told Kate: “I’m sorry it’s been a rough week, we love having you on the telly.”

“Do we, do we?” joked Ben, pretending to be unconvinced.

“Ben is not so sure Lorraine, perhaps it’s because you’re far away from me in different studios,” Kate laughed.

Kate also spoke about her concerns with the brand new NHS test and trace app on Thursday’s show, the day the app launched.

She had downloaded it herself and had a look around and said there were some useful aspects to the app such as the information about the disease it gives users.

But, she added, when she clicked through to book a test, she says the app just linked her to the main website where people book coronavirus tests.

Kate fears people will get symptoms and book a test, but then get so sick they are too poorly to even input their data into the app to say they tested positive.
