Kate Garraway has admitted her husband Derek Draper has been 'devastated' by Covid, 14 months after he was first hospitalised with the virus.
The Good Morning Britain host's other half was struck down by coronavirus in March 2020 and was put into a medically induced coma after his condition deteriorated.
Former Labour aide Derek eventually returned home to be with Kate and the couple's children Billy and Darcy in April, but speaking to Andrew Marr, she admitted that his progress has been slow.
She told the BBC host: "He is devastated by Covid. He can't really move, his communication is very minimal.
"There are moments when they're up, so in those moments you feel that you know he's in there. He has a lot of memory but the accessing of it is very limited."
Andrew is well known to Derek and remarking on how different he is since the last time the pair saw each other, she added: "So how is he? He is a long way from the Derek Draper you knew, Andrew, but he is home and alive."
Earlier this month, Kate was overcome with emotion after Derek remembered her birthday.
She cried happy tears as she told ITV colleague and friend Lorraine Kelly: "At the moment the family and I are looking for lots of little things with Derek - he's home, we can hug him; that's miracle in itself.
"And then we're looking for little bits of him to come back to us. Last night I said to him 'oh it's my birthday tomorrow' and he looked a bit worried and I said 'don't worry, I'm not expecting anything, my birthday present is you being home and I'm going to pop in and see you before I go early.'
"I came in this morning and said 'I'm off to Lorraine now, is there anything you want to say to me?' and he said 'oh happy birthday.'"
