Kate Garraway admits husband Derek 'could be in a coma for a year' on GMB return

Kate Garraway made a tearful return to Good Morning Britain on Friday, as she gave a live update on her husband's battle with Covid-19.

The 53-year-old TV presenter spoke to Ben Shepherd and Ranvir Singh for the first time in 10 weeks, after she stepped back from her role on the show following Derek Draper's admittance to hospital.

He has been in a coma in intensive care and Kate admitted that he may stay in that condition "for up to a year," as she shared the heartbreaking diagnosis.

Speaking from her garden in North London, Kate praised the medical team that have been at Derek's bedside as he battled coronavirus.

She said: "They are incredible with what they have done with a disease that nobody knows how to cure though they are learn gin every day.

"I said to the doctor, 'why has it affected him so badly? I guess we will find out in a few months time with more knowledge' and he said, 'try a decade.'

"This is a big virus that we don’t understand."

With tears welling in her eyes, Kate had previously revealed: "The fight with the virus has been won and he's still here but it's wreaked extraordinary damage on his body and we don't know if he can recover from that."

Getting down to details of her husband's condition, Kate admitted: "Derek's situation is incredibly rare. The damage he’s sustained and we don't know the affect on his body and if he can recover and how he would recover.

"Some of the damage he’s got, he’s only one in five people they’ve seen with it."

Kate went on to describe how the doctors had not come across someone being so critically ill from Covid-19 and still surviving.

The I'm A Celebrity star continued: "One doctor said to me he is the worst affected person he’s seen who has survived.

"He has seen the same in other patients but they have all died.

"Thank God he has lived so far and I am so grateful for that but they don’t know what they are looking at and what the damage is to his body.

"They have some idea what it would be if it was some other illness but they don’t know with Covid."
