Kate Middleton dons an on-theme nautical ensemble for sailing regatta in the Isle of Wight

When it comes to nailing sensible but chic, few do it better than Kate Middleton.

Well versed in the best way to bring a touch of royal to a wellies and an anorak, and a pinch of princess to tennis attire, the outfit Kate wore to attend today’s sailing regatta in Cowes was no exception.

A nautical striped top, navy culottes and trainers looked equal parts stylish and event-appropriate as she arrived at The Royal Yacht Squadron this afternoon.

What’s more, the whole look can be found on the British high street.

Kate wore a striped frilled top from Sandro, originally £135 it’s now on sale for £81 (shop it here), and some L.K. Bennett wide leg ‘Parker’ trousers. The flattering navy cropped trousers cost £150, but they’re almost entirely sold out online (size 18 still available here).

She finished the look with a pair of Alexa Chung’s favourite trainers, £55 classic white plimsolls by Superga (shop them here).

The only non-high street item Kate chose to wear was a pair of yellow gold leaf-shaped earrings from one of her favourite jewellers Kiki McDonough, which cost £1,500 (shop them here).

Kate’s look was timeless and elegant, but also practical – she is after all preparing to go head-to-head against her husband Prince William in today’s major sailing event.

They’ll be competing alongside celebrities including comedian John Bishop, adventurer Bear Grylls and Olympic champion rower Helen Glover, in the inaugural King's Cup race around Cowes.

Each boat taking part will represent one of Their Royal Highnesses' eight charities and the winning team will be awarded the historic trophy The King’s Cup, which was first presented by King George V at Cowes’ Royal Yacht Squadron in 1920.

If her race day outfit is any kind of prediction as to her success, Kate is onto a winner.
