Kate Bush has published an open letter thanking fans for the “surreal journey” of her first concerts in 35 years. Before the Dawn’s 22 gigs were “one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life”, Bush wrote. They also “kept [their] level of intensity right from the early stages to the end of the very last show”.

“Now all the shows are over, it’s pretty difficult to explain how I feel about it all,” Bush wrote on her website. Although the 56-year-old singer had been absent from the stage since 1979, she “loved the whole process” of staging the 22 London gigs. Of particular impact was its creative team: they were the “ultimate combination of talent and artists”, she wrote. “We became a family and I really miss them all terribly.”

Still, Bush claims that she was surprised most by the fans that turned up to see her. “The really unexpected part of it all was the audiences,” she explained.

“Audiences that you could only ever dream of. One of the main reasons for wanting to perform live again was to have contact with that audience. They took my breath away. Every single night they were so behind us … I just never imagined it would be possible to connect with an audience on such a powerful and intimate level; to feel such, well quite frankly, love.”

Before the Dawn’s last show took place on 1 October. Bush has yet to reveal whether she has plans for any future concerts, nor to confirm reports that footage from these performances will be released as a concert film.

The singer’s most recent album, 50 Words for Snow, was released in 2011.
