Kate and William met Max Boyce at Cardiff Castle, who read them a poem he'd written

Legendary Welsh performer Max Boyce entertained the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with a recital of his hastily re-edited lockdown poem during their visit to Cardiff.

The royal couple stopped off in the Welsh capital during a whistle-stop tour of the UK to meet people who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and to say thanks to frontline workers.

They were at Cardiff Castle on Tuesday morning to speak to students about their mental health experiences at university.  You can follow the royal visit live here.

Max was also there for a performance of his lockdown poem 'When Just The Tide Went Out'.

The poignant and funny poem, that he wrote in April in the middle of the national lockdown, talks about the change in the world and was dedicated to NHS frontline staff.

After performing it for the royal couple, he confessed that he added a couple of lines about the their visit with just a day's notice.

Max started by joking: “Surrounded by the walls of Cardiff Castle, I feel like shouting I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!”

He then laughed with William and Kate about the lines he had added especially for them.

At Cardiff Castle, William and Kate, who wore a red Alexander McQueen coat, also met students from Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales, as they unwrapped their Secret Santa gifts to one another.

The visit coincided with Christmas at the Castle, a festival of festive activities there throughout December.

William and Kate browsed some of the Christmas stalls and toasted large marshmallows over a fire.

Touching one of the sticky sweet treats with her gloved hand, Kate laughed and said: "I'm going to have that marshmallow on my fingers all day."
