Kate and Rio Ferdinand detail the special meaning behind their newborn’s unusual name

Kate and Rio Ferdinand are over the moon after welcoming their first child together.

The former TOWIE star, 29, and her husband Rio have named their baby boy Cree Ferdinand, and there’s a very special meaning behind the unusual name.

According to Newborn bible babynames.com , the unisex name holds historic roots.

The informative website states that the name Cree means ‘Tribe Name’.

And it’s of Native American origin.

“Cree is a name that's been used by parents who are considering unisex or non-gendered baby names - baby names that can be used for any gender,” it goes on.

“From the word Kristineaux, which French fur traders used for the First Nations people near James Bay. Kristineaux became shortened to Kri or CREE in English. "

Proud new mum Kate took to Instagram on Christmas Eve to share the first picture of her baby boy.

The sweet snap saw little Cree being cooed over by his siblings and his proud dad.

The happy family was all dressed in matching green Christmas pyjamas while their dazzling tree stood behind them.

Only the top of little Cree's head could be seen but he appeared to be wearing a babygro in the same style as his siblings.

Alongside the snap, Kate revealed her baby’s name for the first time as she penned: “My whole heart.

"Cree Ferdinand ... our angel boy we all love you so much."

Although this is her first child, Kate has been a stepmother to Rio's three children Lorenz, 14, Tate, 12, and Tia, nine since the pair tied the knot in 2019.

Back in June, the lovebirds announced that they were expecting their first child together.

Before giving birth, Kate revealed that she had been on bed rest after painfully tearing her stomach muscles.

During a candid Instagram Q and A, she explained that the injury happened about six weeks ago and resulted in her having to rest for three weeks which she said was tough on her mind.

Thankfully, she’s able to enjoy some well needed rest and recuperation over the Christmas period.
