Katarina Johnson-Thompson sees Olympic champion Nafi Thiam take her world lead

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has lost her heptathlon world lead to arch rival Nafi Thiam despite an elbow injury restricting the Belgian.

Thiam, the Olympic and world champion, missed last month’s Gotzis Hypo-Meeting which Johnson-Thompson won with the performance of her life.

But she reasserted her superiority over the weekend, winning the Talence Decastar meet in France with a score of 6819 points - six more than the Liverpudlian’s total.

Her tally included a world best in the heptathlon high jump of 2.02 metres and a Belgian long jump record of 6.67m.

And she did all that despite only being able to take two javelin throws due to elbow pain.

The clash between Johnson-Thompson and Thiam this October is expected to be a highlight of the Doha World Championships.
