Katarina Johnson-Thompson will be looking to claim her first global senior outdoor medal when she takes on the planet’s finest all-round athletes in the heptathlon at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha.
The 26-year-old has experienced heartbreak in each of the last two world championships. In 2015, she was lying in second place after the opening day of events, but failed to record a legal mark in the long jump and eventually finished in 28th place.
Two years later, in London, a sub-par display in the high jump, usually among her strongest events, put pay to any medal hopes.
In 2018, however, Johnson-Thompson struck gold in the shorter-form pentathlon at the indoor world championships, and then became Commonwealth champion outdoors just weeks later.
The Liverpudlian set a new personal best mark of 6813 points in Gotzis in May, a score bettered only by Jessica Ennis-Hill and Denise Lewis in British heptathlon history.
Standing in her way in Belgium’s Nafi Thiam, the current world and Olympic champion, who has been in incredible form this season, and despite Johnson-Thompson’s improved consistency, it would still be a huge upset if Thiam fails to retain her title.
