A new high definition remaster of the original Katamari Damacy called Katamari Damacy Reroll is released for the Switch and PC this December.
In addition to supporting local split-screen multiplayer, Katamari Damacy Reroll also has motion controls available via the Joy-Cons, although I think I will stick with the regular input considering that’s what the game was originally built around.
Apart from the fact that Bandai Namco still doesn’t call this game Katamari Damashii outside of Japan, I am really happy to see the first game in the series given a wider audience on the Switch and PC.
The original game was released back in 2004 on the PlayStation 2 and had you roll up various items into an ever-growing ball of clutter. The objectives varied from picking up certain items to reaching a size limit.
What was especially impressive was that as the ball grew, the objects you could pick up would get larger in size. That meant you could start with picking up boxes on the ground and end up rolling over skyscrapers towards the end of a level.
The final level in the first game took this premise to a particularly epic conclusion, as you could pick up islands in the ocean among other things.
The story for these games was also pretty bonkers and was coupled with an equally surreal visual delivery. The music was also fantastic and featured all manner of famous Japanese musicians and fitted the game perfectly.
In any case, if you weren’t around to play the game in 2004 then you have another chance later this year on the Switch.
Katamari Damacy Reroll is released for the Switch on November 30 via the eShop and December 7 for its physical version. There will also be a PC release of the game.
