Kasper Schmeichel was able to reassure Christian Eriksen's partner that the midfielder was alive after his horrifying collapse.
Eriksen, 29, fell to the floor under no challenge during Denmark's Euro 2020 fixture with Finland on Saturday afternoon, leaving everyone in Parken Stadium in no doubt over the severity of the situation.
He was rapidly attended by heroic medics who were able to successfully defibrillate his heart after he suffered what was later confirmed as a cardiac arrest.
It took several harrowing minutes before Eriksen was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital, with fans in the stadium and watching on television unsure of his condition.
In the immediate aftermath of the collapse, Eriksen's long-term partner, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, with whom he has two children, ran from the stands to be by his side.
Visibly distraught, she was consoled by Denmark goalkeeper Schmeichel and captain Simon Kjaer, with the former able to comfort her with the news Eriksen was breathing.
Schmeichel's dad, Manchester United and Denmark legend Peter, spoke to his son about the terrifying incident in Copenhagen and shared their conversation on BBC Radio 5 Live.
"I saw my son Kasper run over to her, and I spoke to him last night," said the retired shot-stopper. "He said that Christian is breathing.
"She actually thought that he’d passed away, and just to confirm that [he was breathing], he went back to be absolutely sure that he wasn’t saying anything that was out of order.
"By then Christian was talking to the doctor and we could see there was a little bit of calm there.
"But until it was confirmed it was really terrible to watch it all and to understand why a fit, 29-year-old player at this level and how it can happen like that.
"And having a son there, straight away you relate that to yourself."
Schmeichel also described the incident as "the worst two hours in my time in football" and added: "We had absolutely no information but we could see it was very, very serious.
"You look at the reaction of the players and it happened not very far from all the wives of the players and, of course, Christian’s partner would have seen that."
Schmeichel, 34, continues to show a cool head and incredible maturity, having been one of the first Leicester City players on the scene when the club's former owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, tragically died in a helicopter crash in 2018.
Schmeichel has since provided an encouraging update on his compatriot, saying he has been smiling and laughing in hospital.
The Premier League and FA Cup winner said: "It was damn nice to see him smile and laugh and be himself
"I knew Christian's wife, children, and parents were there, so at one point I tried to look for them. It is an inhuman situation for them to go through."
"We talked about nothing and everything," Schmeichel added. "As long as he is well - that has been the most important thing."
