Kasper Schmeichel: Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers hails 'world class' goalkeeper after penalty save

Brendan Rodgers has labelled Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as “world class” and “invaluable” after earning his side a point by saving a penalty against Brighton.

Neal Maupay’s spot kick was superbly saved by the Dane, ensuring the Foxes extended their lead over Chelsea and Manchester United in the race for a top four finish.

And Rodgers is thrilled to be able to lean on the 33-year-old despite his side playing below their best.

“He’s brilliant, he’s a world class goalkeeper,” Rodgers said. “Kasper has made a great save from the penalty, he’s invaluable.

“There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the top goalkeepers in this league. Just his presence in the goal and his leadership.

“He studies penalty takers and puts in the work and he’s so agile. He has been absolutely brilliant in the two games back.”

Rodgers insists his side are still lacking ”rhythm” after failing to win either of their two games since returning.

“It’s strange for everyone, but all the players and staff are adapting to the new game.

“The game has changed in the stands, but on the pitch the intensity is still there.

“We have to adapt to that, the performance in the second half was much better.

“We were able to sustain our attacks, cut out a threat of a counter-attack for them. It felt like the goal was coming.

“We’re just not finding the final pass or touch to finish off some of the opportunities and we need to create more.

“We’ll take our point, seven games to go, and we hope to get much better.”
