Kasper Schmeichel 'inspired' by Craig Gordon as Celtic and Hearts comeback leaves Denmark keeper awestruck

Kasper Schmeichel says Craig Gordon is an inspiration to goalkeepers all over the world after overcoming injury to restore himself as Scotland's No.1.

Gordon made history back in 2007 when he became the most expensive goalkeeper ever purchased by a British club.

But his £9m move from Hearts to Sunderland didn't work out as planned as he suffered a pair of serious injuries that would plague him for years to come.

He signed for Celtic in 2014 however and has steadily rebuilt his career since. Now playing for his boyhood Jambos, Gordon is Scotland's first choice at 38 years old - something opposite number Schmeichel can't help but marvel at.

He told Sky Sports : "I've followed him all the way through his career. He was the most expensive keeper ever in the Premier League at one time.

"He had a couple of horrific injuries, but he came back at Celtic and did amazing and now he's come back into the Scotland squad.

"It just shows a mentality that is quite unique. The setbacks he's had with injuries, to keep coming back and have that kind of drive, is absolutely amazing.

"It's an inspiration for any goalkeeper to see that whatever injuries you have, you can come back and make it to the top again."

The Leicester stopper wasn't letting his admiration for Gordon stop him from talking up his side's chances when the teams meet at Hampden on Monday, however.

Scotland need a win to give themselves the best chance of securing a seeded spot for March's World Cup playoffs and have been in fine form since losing to the Danes in Copenhagen.

And he insists the pressure is on Steve Clarke's team to chase the game and get a result.

He added: "We've obviously done our homework on them and know that they've been on a good run of form since that game.

"They're very strong, so with them being at home, I'd say the pressure's on them to come and beat us.

"We're very confident in our own ability."
