Colombian singer Karol G has apologised after posting a much-ridiculed photo of her black-and-white dog to promote Black Lives Matter.
Following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests about police brutality and racism in America, the reggaeton artist tweeted a now-deleted photo of her pet with the caption: "The perfect example that Black and White TOGETHER look beautiful. #BlackLivesMatter."
Her tweet was mocked by many, with one user writing: "Karol G really used her black and white dog to try and make a point about racial justice........"
“Na dont tell me karol g posted a pic of her dog and that ended racism,” said another.
A third added: “Karol G really said look at my dog and thought it fixed everything.”
On Monday (2 June), the singer expressed her regret over the post.
"I was wrong and I apologise,” she tweeted. “I want to make clear that my intentions were right in the photo I posted earlier. I meant to say that racism is terrible and that I cannot begin to understand it. These past few days have been hard and its extremely painful to see it continue to happen. IT NEEDS TO STOP. There is only one race and that is the human race. I recognise that the way I expressed myself was not right."
She added: "I am still learning and taking active steps to help, aid and evoke change and I continue educating myself to understand the experience.”
Karol G is not the first celebrity to be criticised for her response to the George Floyd case. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, expressed regret over not speaking out sooner. Love Is Blind contestant Kelly Chase, meanwhile, has apologised after using the terms “all lives matter” and referring to Black Lives Matter protesters as “coloured people”.
