What once seemed like a fairytale romance turned into heartbreak—and now, Karol G is finally telling her side of the story.
The Colombian superstar opens up in her new Netflix documentary, set to premiere on May 8, about the emotional toll her relationship with Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA took on her life and career. Their love story began in 2018 during the filming of their music video "Culpables," shortly after Anuel was released from prison. The chemistry was instant—and explosive, both personally and professionally.
Together, they became one of Latin music's most iconic couples, collaborating on massive hits like "Secreto," "China," and "Follow." By April 2019, they were engaged, with Karol showing off a diamond ring at the Latin Billboard Music Awards. To fans, they were the reggaeton power couple. Untouchable. Euphoric.
Behind the scenes, cracks had already started to show.
By early 2021, rumors of tension and jealousy began surfacing. According to sources close to the couple, Karol felt "suffocated" in the relationship, and professional competition strained their bond. During an emotional Instagram Live that April, Anuel confirmed their breakup, stating they had been apart for months and denying any infidelity.
While they tried to keep the split private, their breakup made headlines across Latin America and beyond. The end of their relationship marked the end of an era in urbano music.
Karol has since spoken candidly about the deep pain she felt, saying in past interviews that she cried constantly and felt like she was dying inside. Still, until now, she never explained what truly led to the breakup—until Netflix gave her the space to speak freely.

"It was hell."
In the documentary, Karol doesn't hold back. Reflecting on the relationship, she says:
"My past relationship was really heavy. Getting out of it was toxic. I would wake up feeling like I was going to die. I felt like I had no value as a person. I couldn't see the success. I couldn't see the greatness."
"I felt like I wouldn't be able to leave. When all you do is suffer—suffer, suffer, suffer—and you don't leave because you're afraid to suffer more. It was a f**king nightmare. A hell."
Karol says that what helped her heal was her music. Her 2023 album "Mañana Será Bonito" became both a personal and creative turning point. Not only did it win her a Grammy, it also became the centerpiece of the most successful tour of her career—and one of the biggest tours in Latin music history.
Through heartbreak, Karol found purpose. "What's beautiful is that through my songs I was able to speak for people who don't always know how to express what they feel," she says in the film.
Moving on—personally and professionally
Since the breakup, both artists have taken different paths.
Karol G is now in a relationship with fellow Colombian singer Feid. The two have shared the stage—and plenty of affectionate moments in public. Anuel, meanwhile, married Dominican rapper Yailin La Más Viral in 2022. The couple separated in early 2023, not long after welcoming their daughter Catleya. Anuel also has another daughter from a different relationship and, in 2025, welcomed a new baby with Venezuelan model Laury Saavedra.
While Anuel's personal life remains in the spotlight, Karol's career has skyrocketed. With her Netflix documentary and a career-defining tour, she has redefined what it means to rise from heartbreak—and turned her pain into power.
