Karnataka woos US companies over tech collaboration in space startups, ESDM

BENGALURU: A Karnataka government delegation led by industries minister M B Patil has embarked on a two week trip to the United States of America to woo big investors from that country to Karnataka.

The bigger concentration of the delegation is in the sectors of space technology and Electronic Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) with special emphasis on mobile phone manufacturers like Apple and aerospace companies like Intelstat and RTX (earlier known as Raytheon).

It is learnt that the delegation is expected to meet as many as 30 companies from Electrical Vehicles (EV) manufacturers to Fintech and from Aerospace to Health and ESDM in the span of the next two weeks across the USA.

The team will be traveling to Washington, Boston, Austin, Dallas and San Francisco during the duration of their visit.

On Monday, Patil and the industries department held talks in Washington with RTX which already has a R&D centre in Bengaluru to discuss the expansion plans of the company in enhancing supply chain connections and considering electronics manufacturing in Karnataka.

It is said that both sides expressed keenness in exploring possible partnerships with space industry startups for technology collaboration.

The minister also emphasised on partnerships with the state government and educational institutions to nurture a talent pipeline.

It also held a discussion with Intelstat with primary focus on the operational scope of the Indian subsidiary and exploring satellite sourcing opportunities from Indian space startups.

Meanwhile, government sources suggest that the delegation will also be looking at wooing Apple to consider setting up their ESDM business in Karnataka as well, after its iPhone suppliers like Foxconn have already set up their plants in the state.
