Karnataka: Several low-lying areas in Mandya inundated

MANDYA: A flood-like situation continued to prevail in the district following heavy discharge from KRS reservoir. Overflowing Cauvery River has inundated several low-lying areas in the district.

Pilgrimage centres including Paschimavahini, Gosayaghat, and Wellesley Bridge in Srirangapatna partially submerged in floodwater. In Ranganatittu bird sanctuary, the entry of tourists is restricted due to the heavy flow of water.

Soon after releasing more than 50,000 cusecs of water from Hemavati and Harangi upstream reservoirs, the district administration swung into action and barricaded the entries which lead to Cauvery River. The water dicharge could be doubled in the coming days, said officials.

However, irrigation department officers said that if more than 1 lakh cusecs of water was released from the dam, it may affect several low-lying areas.

‘Invite Yaduveer’

Meanwhile, corporator Lokesh V from Mysuru City Corporation submitted a memorandum to DC Ashwati and urged the district administration to invite royal family scion Yaduveer Wadiyar to bagina offering ceremony which is going to be held soon. TNN
