BENGALURU: Karnataka on Tuesday recorded another sharp spike in fresh Covid-19 cases, with 41,457 people contracting the disease. Bengaluru accounted for the highest number at 25,595, the city’s second highest-ever infections in a day.
The last time Karnataka reported more cases was 41,664 on May 15. Bengaluru reported 26,756 on April 30.
On Tuesday, five other districts reported more than 1,000 cases — Mysuru (1,848), Hassan (1,739), Tumakuru (1,731), Dakshina Kannada (1,058) and Bengaluru Rural (1,116). Mandya (801) and Udupi (895) districts also reported a significant rise.
With 1. 8 lakh tests conducted in the state in the past 24 hours, the test positivity rate for the day stood at 22. 3%. The active caseload in the state rose to 2. 5 lakh, of which nearly 1. 8 lakh are in Bengaluru alone.
The state reported 20 deaths, of which seven were from Bengaluru, three from Mysuru, two in Tumakuru and one each from Hassan, Bengaluru rural, Uttara Kannada, Chitradurga, Ramanagara, Dharwad, Davanagere and Chamarajanagar. Two of the dead were girls below 16 years of age.
A 13-year-old girl from Chitradurga died on January 17 after five days of hospitalisation. In Mysuru, a 16-year-old girl died on January 15.
