Karnataka: Public works minister rules out closure of Shiradi Ghat Road

MYSURU: Excessive rain in the Old Mysore and coastal region of the state has left roads inundated, triggered landslides and farms flooded. Although commute on many roads in the Western Ghats is proving slightly treacherous owing to the inclement weather, public works minister CC Patil on Monday ruled out closure of the Shiradi Ghat Road, an arterial highway in the state connecting the coastal city of Mangaluru with Bengaluru. Patil, interacting with representatives of the press in Sakleshpur in Hassan district, took stock of the damage caused by the rain in the region, and more specifically, inspected the condition of the Shiradi Ghat Road.

Highlighting the importance of the road, the minister said, “It is the main link between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. There is no question of closing Shiradi Ghat Road. We will initiate work to ensure that the road is repaired.”

Patil said that the road was used by more than 30,000 vehicles daily. “Closure of the road will greatly inconvenience the public. So, we will undertake repair in such a manner so as to cause least trouble for the commuters. There is no shortage of funds to initiate work on the road,” the minister said.
