BELAGAVI: An effigy of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma was found hanging on Fort Road in Belagavi on Friday.
Sharma was recently suspended from the party after she made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate. Her remarks put the central government in a spot when Islamic countries worldwide started speaking out against it.
The BJP sacked Sharma as a spokesperson. However, protests are on by Muslim organisations who want her arrested.
BJP corporator Shankar Patil (Ward no. 7) informed police, who removed the effigy.
Pro-Hindutva outfits have demanded the arrest of those behind the mischief.
If they wanted, they could have protested or gone to court. But such acts against a woman are shameful and dangerous for society. Police should take strict action against them, pro-Hindutva outfits said.
DCP Ravindra Gadadi said: "We registered a suo motu case and formed a team to nab the miscreants."
