Karnataka: Nobody can stop a citizen from practising one’s religion, says former CM Siddaramaiah

MYSURU: Underscoring the primacy of the Constitution, former chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said that no citizen of the country could be denied the right to practise one’s religion. “The Freedom of Religion is enshrined in our Constitution,” he said.

Siddaramaiah, participating in an Iftar party in Mysuru, said that each human being was created by God, and was therefore equal. “We follow the religion, according to the norms of which we are raised. But people of one religion cannot interfere in matters pertaining to another,” the former CM said.

The leader of the opposition in the assembly said that both the state and central governments were trying to assert the primacy of one religion. “This is in violation of the Constitution, which mandates that we respect people of all religions and caste equally. We need to work towards creating a more peaceful society. Each individual in society must strive towards peace and prosperity of all. This country does not belong to people of one caste or religion,” Siddaramaiah added.

Former minister and Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait, former deputy mayor Anwar Baig, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president R Dhruvanarayana and legislators HP Manjunath, Yathindra Siddaramaiah were among those in attendance at the event.
