BENGALURU: Higher education minister CN Ashwath Narayan on Thursday said there’ll be no new government engineering colleges in the state owing to lack of demand.
Replying to a question by BJP MLA Ramesh Bhusanur in the assembly seeking a government engineering college in Sindgi assembly constituency, Narayan said there are no takers for courses especially in new colleges. “In many colleges, seats are lying vacant. In Vijayapura district alone, in three government colleges 50 to 75 percent seats are vacant,” he said.
According to Karnataka Examinations Authority, which allots seats to students through counselling, 23,000 seats in government and aided colleges saw no takers for 2022-23. This is said to be the highest vacancy in the last five years.
