MANGALURU/ UDUPI/ UTTARA KANNADA: Rains that had petered off after a couple of bursts in June month have started again with 46 locations in the coast getting high amounts of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 7am on Sunday.
While 30 locations in twin districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada got high amounts of rainfall ranging from 125mm to 69mm, 16 locations in Uttara Kannada district got rainfall ranging from 112mm to 69mm. Two places in Shivamogga and Kodagu also got good rainfall making them stand in top 50 locations in the state that got high amounts of rainfall.
The highest rainfall was recorded at Hebri, Karkala, Udupi district 125.5mm; Adyar, Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada 113mm and Mugwa at Honnavar, Uttara Kannada recorded 112.8 mm.
Though there was continuous downpour from Saturday, with a few breaks in between, there have been no reports of major damage or loss of life in the districts of DK and Udupi. There were, however, incidents of damage to houses due to hillock caving in or compound wall collapse in some places of the district. In rural areas of the district, there were major power outages as the strong winds had uprooted or damaged electric poles after tree fall. Visitors to the beaches have been warned not to venture into the waters due to strong waves and currents.
IMD in its weather update for the next 48 hours stated that there would be generally cloudy skies and rain was very likely all over the coast. Surface winds were likely to be strong and gusty at times, it added.
