MYSURU: Several government agencies have teamed up to create an exclusive first-of-its-kind park for monkeys on Chamundi foothills.
The proposed monkey park will come up at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore on four acres of land. The food and medical care will be provided for the monkeys in this park where the public will be allowed to feed monkeys.
It may be recalled that a similar project proposed in the Shivamogga district to resolve the monkey menace is yet to be implemented due to the opposition from the locals.
According to Krishnaraja MLA SA Ramadas, who chaired a meeting recently on the setting up of this park at Chamundi Hills. many monkeys need rehabilitation due to age related ailments. “The idea behind this project is providing food, shelter, and medical care for the monkeys,” he said.
“It will be implemented by the veterinary and animal husbandry section of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and other government departments,” he explained.
“As the forest land is available, there will not be any challenges to implementing this project,” said Ramadas.
Meanwhile, activists are not impressed by the project. According to Shylajesha S, a monkey park in the hills will further affect the ecology.
“Monkey menace is a common problem in most tourist destinations. We need to find scientific solutions to this problem. More projects in the Chamundi hills are not welcome,” added the activist .
