Karnataka: MLA seeks info on death of kids

BELAGAVI: Ramdurg BJP MLA Mahadevappa Yadawad on Tuesday raised the January deaths of three children after getting measles and rubella vaccines at the Karnataka Development Programme meeting, held at the conference hall of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

Pavitra Hulagur (13 months) and Madhu Karagundi (14 months) of Bochabal village and Chetan Pujari (15 months) of Mallapur village, all from Ramdurg taluk, died after getting the vaccine on January 12 at Salahalli PHC.

Four kids had taken the vaccine, three fell ill and succumbed in a local hospital.

MLA Yadawad said the families of the deceased children have been asking him about an investigation and what action has been taken against the culprits. Even after six months, no statement has been issued from the health department, he said.

Responding to the query, district health officer Dr. Mahesh Koni said the incident took place due to the health problems the children had. They had mild fever and some other infection, he said. He also said action has been taken against a staff nurse and a pharmacist for negligence.

Earlier, it was stated that keeping the MR vaccines in a freezer in a hotel in the village, disrupting the cold chain, was the reason for the deaths.

District in-charge minister Govind Karjol asked Koni to convey the probe results to the families of the deceased children.
