Karnataka: Heavy rain in Krishna basin triggers flood worry in districts

VIJAYAPURA: Heavy rain in the Krishna river basin area also in Maharashtra has raised the spectre of floods in Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts. The executive engineer of the Almatti reservoir has cautioned that the dam was receiving heavy inflow and “water can be released any moment”.

“People in downstream villages and towns may have to move to safer places with their belongings and livestock,” he added.

The reservoir received an inflow of 75,149 cusecs by 8 am on Sunday and it increased to 82,972 cusecs by 6 pm. Sources in the Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam said that the Koyna dam area had received 151 mm of rain as of 8 am on Sunday. “Inflow there is at 38,194 cusecs. Navja (194 mm) and Mahabaleshwar (177 mm) have also received good quantities of rain,” an official said.

Inflow in the Malaprabha (Renuka Sagar) increased to 6,791 cusecs while outflow was 194 cusecs.
