YADGIR: Moulana Azad School at Hunasagi never faced a problem when the hijab-saffron scarf controry spread in other campuses because Muslim students on their own took off the hijab while entering school.
The school in Yadgir district is being hailed as an example of communal harmony at a time the state government is trying to extinguish the embers of protests elsewhere.
Moulana Azad School was established in 2017-18 by the minority department of the state government. Of the 272 students studying in classes 4 to 10, 108 are from the minority community.
Ramesh Patil, the headmaster, said: "Our schoolchildren are a good example for communal harmony. Girl students from the Muslim community attend classes without the hijab. They come to school from their homes wearing the hijab. They remove it while entering the premises. Our staff follow the same rule."
Patil said: "Parents are telling their children to follow the practice. It helped us in sending a message on communal harmony. Students from all communities are studying in harmony in our school. We impart education in Urdu and English medium."
Mahimuda Begum, a teacher at the school, said many students are Muslims and all are focused on their studies. "We haven't faced any hijab-shawl issue in our school and we are encouraging students to live in peace and sending a message that we all are equal," she said.
MG Biradar, a grade II tahsildar, said: "We visited the school and are happy to see that all the students are following the court order promptly and voluntarily. This institution is a model for all other schools and colleges."
