Karnataka: Gang of five cheats businessman of Rs 2.5 crore

BENGALURU: A 32-year-old businessman filed a complaint against a gang of five persons for allegedly cheating him of Rs 2.5 crore on the pretext of getting a contract to supply 1,800 security guards for a government agency.

Anil Kumar K, a resident of Dharwad, told Jayanagar police that he runs a security agency and came in contact with the main suspect, Suresh, in August 2020. Suresh had informed Kumar that Karnataka Residential Education Institutions Society (KREIS) was planning to hire 1,800 guards through security agencies. Suresh told Kumar that KREIS might call for a tender to procure security personnel and assured him of getting the project.

Suresh introduced Kumar to the other suspects — Mahadeva Shastri, Raghunath, Halesh and Arun — who promised to get the tender awarded to him.

The gang allegedly conspired to extort money from Kumar and demanded Rs 2.5 crore as commission for them. Kumar thought them to be genuine and paid them the money. Only later did he realise that he had been tricked.

Jayanagar police registered a case of cheating, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation against the gang and probe is on.
