Karnataka cop accused of assaulting minor rape survivor taken into custody

MANGALURU: A constable attached to the Dakshina Kannada district police has been accused of sexually assaulting a rape survivor, a minor, with whom he came in touch during investigations and legal procedures in the earlier case.

The constable, Shivaraj, has been taken into custody. He has been booked under the Pocso Act and other IPC sections.

The survivor’s father, who filed the complaint, said the minor was being assaulted over the past six months on the promise of marriage.

Sources said the minor was raped about two years ago and a case was registered under the Pocso Act. Following this, constable Shivaraj allegedly used to visit her house often on the pretext of issuing summons and other legal procedures.

Her parents came to know of the matter when the girl became pregnant. When they confronted Shivaraj, he refused to marry the girl and allegedly gave the family Rs 35,000 to cover abortion expenses.

The survivor is likely to give her statement to police on Tuesday.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
