BELAGAVI: Fifty-five students of the government primary school in Basidoni village of Saundatti taluk fell ill on Monday evening after consuming folic acid tablets. The government supplies the tablets to school children to prevent anaemia and thalassemia.

According to sources, students are given the tablets every Monday in schools. Of 239 students who took the tablets in Basidoni, 55 in classes 6 and 7 suffered from stomachache and headache by 7pm. Of these, 21 students (15 girls and six boys) were seriously ill and shifted to Saundatti taluk hospital. Taluk health officer Dr Mahesh Chittaragi said all students are recovering and there is no need for panic. Some students were discharged from hospital on Tuesday morning. tnn
