BENGALURU: Residents of Ammanaghatta in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district are clueless as to what hit their village on Thursday. After receiving 199mm of rain in 24 hours, the villagers on Friday woke up to five lakes in their neighbourhood overflowing.
Swirling waters entered 20 houses and the gram panchayat office in their midst and flooded coconut and arecanut plantations and fields where ragi, maize and other crops stood.
According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Ammanaghatta, 96km from Bengaluru, received the highest rainfall on Thursday in the state.
Residents of about 25 houses built on their farms are stranded with approach roads under three-feet water. “For two days now, I have not been able to go to the village to bring milk and groceries as water from the lakes has flooded roads. I have no idea how long this will continue,” said GD Nagaraju, a farmer.
Ammanaghatta is a hamlet with 400 houses, 250 of which are in farms. The village population is around 3,000. Doddakere and Chikkakere of Ammanaghatta and neighbouring G Aruvesandra Kere, Varadenahalli Kere and Thippuru Kere are overflowing.
